Australia Day marks Captain Phillip’s proclamation of the Eastern Australian coast as British territory in 1788. In the early nineteenth century these celebrations were marked by sporting events such as the worlds oldest regatta still held in Sydney today.
But for the most part, this date has been reserved for drinking and merriment in the name of people who call Australia home. Today, Australia Day is a community day. Formal ceremonies around the country, such as flag raising, citizenship ceremonies are held and the presentation of community awards, join celebrations of multiculturalism and our peaceful and prosperous livelihoods.
The Survival Day celebrations held since 1938, mark the day with cultural, arts and community events staged around the country. |
